About Byron Bay :

Cape Byron is easy to find on a map because it is Australia's most easterly point - 153° 39´ east, - located on the far north coast of New South Wales.

Byron Bay is Australia's most easterly point

Byron Bay is famous for it's beautiful  beaches, unspoilt hinterland, and relaxed easy-going lifestyle.

From the lush hinterland to the sparkling beaches on the coast, the region is full of natural wonders. Byron Bay is a melting pot of surf culture, alternative philosophies and hedonistic indulgence.

The laid-back towns of Ballina, Lennox Head and Brunswick Heads, plus the arts-loving villages of Bangalow and Mullumbimby, combine the casual vibe of coastal retreats with a touch of city style.

The Northern Rivers region in which Byron Bay is situated is known as "Summerland" - with  average summer temperatures of 21C - 28C, and average winter temperatures of 15C - 21C, - a delightfully temperate sub-tropical climate which allows both locals and visitors  to enjoy a wide range  of outdoor leisure activities. Byron Bay has quite a high rainfall giving rise to beautiful stretches of coastal rainforest.

Byron Shire has a population of close to 30,000, while the town of Byron Bay has a population of about 9,000.

Byron Bay is located just a few kilometres off the Pacific Highway, 800kms north of Sydney, and 175kms south of Brisbane.

Domestic Airports are located in Ballina (30mins south) or Coolangatta (60mins north) and busses arrive regularly. (see How to Get to Byron - right hand menu).

The main attraction of Byron Bay is its beaches! The long stretches of beach and the fine white sand attracts holiday makers from all over Australia and the World. Byron Bay is also a popular surfing destination with many good surfing beaches for all levels of surfing ability.

Byron Bay is also home to the Julian Rocks Marine Park an area of ocean around Julian Rocks - an outcrop of uninhabited rocky island about 3kms off the beach. Julian Rocks attracts many Scuba Divers who dive in the clear water to view the variety of marine life.

Off the beaches Byron Bay has many cultural attractions such as the weekly markets, a vibrant shopping area, and an unusually high standard of local music festivals.

There are also many interesting trips that you can take into the hinterland to enjoy the coastal rainforest.

Byron Bay - When to visit

Byron Bay attracts holiday makers from all over the world. If you enjoy the crowds and nightlife then you will enjoy Byron Bay during the Summer holiday periods (Byron Bay is at its busiest around Christmas and New Year. NSW and Queensland Schools holidays are also a peak period. Easter draws big crowds to the East Coast Blues and Roots Music Festival - the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.)

If you prefer to visit without the crowds, try visiting in late Summer or Autumn when accommodation will be cheaper and the beaches a little quieter, even Winter is a nice time and you will have a better chance of sunny days ( most of Byron Bay's rainfall is in Summer) and the ocean is quite warm for swimming.
